Frederick Community College is proud to spotlight a compelling article by Lieutenant Rick Weldon, a close associate of the Mid-Atlantic Center for Emergency Management & Public Safety (MACEM&PS) at FCC. With over a decade of experience in corrections, Weldon brings valuable insights to his recent piece in American Jails Magazine, “Unseen Guardians: Investigating and Addressing PTSD, Suicide, and Support Interventions for Correctional Officers,” which synthesizes crucial research on mental health challenges faced by correctional officers.

Drawing from various studies and his professional experience, Weldon’s article highlights alarming trends in the corrections field. He points to research showing significantly higher rates of PTSD among correctional officers compared to the general public and even other public safety professions. Weldon emphasizes how the constant threat of danger and exposure to violence contribute substantially to these mental health challenges, noting studies that reveal concerningly high suicide rates among correctional officers.

Weldon’s synthesis not only brings attention to these critical issues but also outlines recommendations from researchers and professionals in the field. He discusses proposals for improved mental health resources, the need for cultural changes to reduce stigma around seeking help, and the implementation of supportive policies for officers exposed to violent incidents.

John Packard, a professor of Corrections at FCC, underscores the importance of Weldon’s work stating, “the article highlights… key issues we identify in our courses as hurdles that need to be overcome in our criminal justice system. Our curriculum helps students recognize and respond to their mental health needs and for those working in high-stress public safety environments. By integrating research like this, we prepare future professionals to create stronger support systems within the corrections field.”

By compiling and presenting this research, Weldon’s work underscores the importance of FCC’s partnerships with public safety professionals. It brings vital real-world insights into the classroom and contributes to the broader understanding of challenges in criminal justice and public safety.
